NUT wants states to take-over payment of teachers’ salaries
The Nigeria Union of Teachers, NUT Delta State Wing, has made case for primary teachers’ salaries to be taken away from local governments and transferred to states.
Comrade Jonathan Jemiyeriegbe, state chairman of NUT, made the call on the sidelines of a 3-day seminar organized for SIWEC members in Asaba.
He maintained that the union is not against local government enjoying autonomy, but what is concern to the teachers is the financial load on local councils, therefore the urgency for states to shoulder the responsibility.
Jemiyeriegbe stated that to enhance prompt and easy payment of primary school teacher’s salary, the function should be transferred to state governments, stressing that the NUT is committed in enhancing industrial harmony.
He commended the state government for offsetting some arrears owed teachers in the state and called for its retention
