Benue Anti Open Grazing Law: Herdsmen Arrested For Murder, Rape

The Benue State government is set to charge four herdsmen to court for violating the anti-open grazing law as well as for murder and rape.

Speaking with journalists after he presented vehicles to vigilante groups in Makurdi, Governor Samuel Ortom said since the law came into effect, two persons had been killed; one from Logo local government and the other from Guma following attacks by herdsmen, while others who sustained injuries were receiving treatment at various hospitals.

According to him, some of the herdsmen who launched the two attacks killing and wounding people as well as raping a woman ran away but were pursued and arrested by security agencies.

He said they were now in the custody of the Benue State Police Command saying that they would be prosecuted in accordance with the law.

The governor pledged that his administration would not condone any form of impunity but will implement the law to the letter.

In separate responses, the Commandant, Benue State Vigilante, Mr. George Mbessey, and the chairman, Livestock Guards, Alhaji Aliyu Tershaku, expressed gratitude to the governor for facilitating their assignment and pledged to justify the confidence reposed in them.
