U.S. Mission Nigeria Announces 2018 Funding Opportunity for Cultural Preservation
U.S. Mission Nigeria is calling for proposals for the 2018 U.S. Ambassadors Fund for Cultural Preservation (AFCP) for both large and small grants.
The deadline for receipt of proposals is January 19, 2018.
The AFCP was established by the U.S. Congress in 2001 in collaboration with the Department of State's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA) to assist countries in preserving their cultural heritage.
Since its inception, the AFCP has preserved museum collections, protected rare manuscripts, and restored historic buildings throughout Nigeria.
Some past AFCP projects in Nigeria include: Preservation of Islamic manuscripts at the National Archives (2007); Restoration of the Gobarau Minaret, Katsina (2010); Preservation of the Kansakali Gate, Kano (2010); Conservation of pottery collections at the National Museum of Unity, Ibadan (2011); and Conservation of collections at the National Museum, Jos (2017).
The AFCP Large Grants Program supports the preservation of major ancient archaeological sites, historic buildings and monuments, and major museum collections that are accessible to the public and protected by law in the host country.
Projects may include preventive conservation, stabilization, conservation, consolidation, anastylosis, and restoration.
AFCP Small Grants support the preservation of cultural sites, cultural objects, and forms of traditional cultural expression in more than 100 countries around the world, including Nigeria.
AFCP-supported projects include the assessment and conservation of rare manuscripts and museum collections, as well as the documentation of vanishing craft techniques and indigenous languages.
Cultural heritage endures as a reminder of the contributions and historical experiences of humanity. By taking a lead role in efforts to preserve cultural heritage, the U.S. demonstrates its respect for other cultures.
