Adamu mulls reintroduction of school sports

Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu, has said government is aware of the need to re-introduce school sports in all schools as a way of raising a pool of talents for selection in national and international competitions.

Adamu, who stated this at the maiden edition of the Federal Education Sector Games, FEDUGAM 2017, in Lafia, Nasarawa state, said the school sports for the 104 Federal Unity Colleges currently taking place in Jos, Plateau State, was part of the efforts to reintroduce school sports.

Represented by the permanent secretary, Federal ministry of Education, Arch Sunny Echono, the minister said the games were introduced to foster unity, friendship and synergy among agencies and staff of the ministry as well as promote the mental and physical fitness of the sectors workforce.

He said the event will serve as a forum to discover hidden sports talents within the Public Service and also serve or a binding force among the staff.

Also speaking, the Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Almakura, deplored the neglect of school sports by successive governments in the country over the years, stating that this was responsible for the lacklustre performance of Nigeria’s sport men and women in major international events in recent years.

Almakura, who was represented by the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Silas Agara, recalled that sporting events were once encouraged by relevant authorities, making educational institutions the veritable avenues that nurtured and discovered some of Nigeria’s most successful sporting men and women who brought honour to the country.

The governor said Nasarawa State has domesticated school sports since the emergence of this government in 2017, while identifying grassroots sport development as the panacea for grooming talents and ensuring the emergence of future athletes.

According to him, his government was intensifying efforts to create a synergy with the federal education and sport authorities to help create well rounded citizens both physically and mentally for national development.
