Also speaking, the Nasarawa State Governor Tanko Almakura, deplored the neglect of school sports by successive governments in the country over the years, stating that this was responsible for the lacklustre performance of Nigeria’s sport men and women in major international events in recent years.
Almakura, who was represented by the Deputy Governor of the state, Mr. Silas Agara, recalled that sporting events were once encouraged by relevant authorities, making educational institutions the veritable avenues that nurtured and discovered some of Nigeria’s most successful sporting men and women who brought honour to the country.
The governor said Nasarawa State has domesticated school sports since the emergence of this government in 2017, while identifying grassroots sport development as the panacea for grooming talents and ensuring the emergence of future athletes.
According to him, his government was intensifying efforts to create a synergy with the federal education and sport authorities to help create well rounded citizens both physically and mentally for national development.
