FUCs principals, teachers to undergo security training
Principals and teachers of the 104 Unity Colleges, FUCs, are to undergo training on security awareness as part of the campaign towards tackling the surging violence against schools across Nigeria.
The proposed training which comes on the heels of the recent abduction and release of over 110 schoolgirls of Government Science and Technical College Dapchi, Yobe state, would be carried out in partnership with Security Awareness and Justice Foundation, SAJF, a non-governmental organisation.
Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who inaugurated a Central Planning Committee in Abuja, to commence implementation of the proposed training, said membership of the Committee is drawn from departments responsible for managing Unity Colleges and the NGO.
Adamu decried growing violence in schools, stressing that government alone could not handle the widespread security challenges in schools across the country.
The minister noted that the situation was creating fear in the minds of students, teachers and parents, and had resulted in the withdrawal of students from schools as well as outright closure of schools for long periods especially in the North East.
He urged the committee to among other things, enlist the support of well-meaning Nigerians to facilitate funding for the exercise as the federal government was not disposed to fund the security awareness workshop.
While urging the committee to report to the education ministry any challenges it may face, he expressed confidence that the committee was inaugurated with the belief that it would complement government’s effort in combating insecurity in schools and make them safer.
Responding, Former Inspector General of Police and Chairman Board of Trustees of Security Awareness and Justice Foundation, Sir Mike Okiro, explained that SAJF is a non-profit-making, non-religious, and non-governmental body whose duty is to prevent conflicts, build peace and provide security awareness as a panacea for development.
Okiro said it was on the strength of the foregoing values that the idea of “securing our children” was birthed to educate teenagers in Nigerian schools starting with FUCs, on basic security information with a view to making them conscious of their environment.
“Our focus on this project shall be on children to whom we remain committed according to global; terrorism index, insurgents and terrorists regularly feast on the recruitment and conscription of children into terrorists organisations, who then trained to carry out act that are antithetical to social and moral existence in our societies,” he said.
