The Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, has indicated interest to partner with a non-governmental organization, Road Caution Awareness Initiative, ROCAI, to ensure safer road use in Benue state.

Benue State FRSC Sector Commandant, Mr. David Mendie, who spoke when he received a team from the NGO in his office, in Makurdi, last week, said the partnership will further enhance proactive measures already employed by the corps to ensure safer road use in the state.

Mendie, who stated that road safety is everybody's business, also urged all stakeholders to get involved saying, "Our work is proactive because a talk about prevention; patrol, traffic control and sensitization so that road crashes will not occur.

"But when they occur, we talk about rescue, post-crash care among others. I can say confidently that over the years, Road Safety has carried out the work it was established for.

“Sensitization is key to our bid to ensure safer highways in the country. Road Safety is everybody's business and as an organization, we cannot do it alone. So, we welcome strong partnership with stakeholders to achieve our goals".

Earlier, founder and chairman of ROCAI, Mr. Noah Tsumbu, said the NGO would add to the efforts of FRSC to enhanced public education and enlightenment campaign on road safety in the state.

“We are partnering with the FRSC to make the public aware of, and to encourage Nigerians to embrace the culture of safer road use act. We feel that someone should speak up on road safety considering the experiences on Nigerian roads.

“This is to help reduce the numerous road crashes, increase in loss of lives on our major roads and within the metropolis.”

Tsumbu said the organization would engage in conscientization of bus drivers, okada riders and other categories of road users and will also use theatrical means such as dramas, dance and music to pass their messages to ensure a high level of safety on Benue roads.
