54% of private varsities are faith-based – ASUU
The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has disclosed that 40 out of the 74 private universities in the country are faith-based.
ASUU president, Comrade Biodun Ogunyemi, who revealed this recently at the public hearing of two bills proposing the amendment of the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, TETFund, Act, said the figure represents about 54 per cent of all private universities in the country.
Ogunyemi also noted that over 70 per cent of the universities are concentrated in two or three zones of the country.
Meanwhile, Nigeria currently has 163 universities out of which 41 are federal, 47 are state and 74 are private.
A recent analysis by Businessday showed that of the 163 institutions 46 are located in the south west, representing about 34 per cent of the institutions, while South-South has 31 representing about 23 per cent, South East has 24 representing 17 per cent.
North Central has 24 representing 17 per cent, North West has 18 representing 13 per cent, while North East has 15 universities representing 11 per cent.
