FG backs upgrade of FRSC academies in Udi, Shendam
The Federal Government has expressed support for the upgrade of the Federal Road Safety Corps, FRSC, Academy in Udi, Enugu State, and FRSC training institution in Shendam, Plateau state.
Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, assured the agency of necessary support to ensure that the institutions are upgraded.
Adamu, who made the remarks while playing host to the Corps Marshal of FRSC, Dr. Boboye Oyeyemi, expressed happiness at the development.
Earlier, the Corps Marshal of FRSC, Oyeyemi, said his visit was to intimate the minister on ongoing efforts to affiliate the FRSC Academy in Udi to the Federal University of Technology, Owerri, FUTO, to award post-graduate diploma and masters in road safety management.
Oyeyemi said a formal letter would soon be sent to the minister to formalize the affiliation process, adding that the management of FUTO had already developed a syllabus for road safety management which has been approved by its senate.
The FRSC boss noted that the Corps had met with the Executive Secretary of NUC, who referred them to the Federal University of Technology, Owerri for affiliation because the university offers Transport Management Technology.
“The Executive Secretary of NUC has referred us to FUTO for affiliation and we can start with affiliation status as that is what we actually require to be awarding postgraduate diplomas and Master’s Degrees in road safety management-related courses.
“So a team was set up between FUTO and FRSC; the school has worked out the syllabus and the senate of the university has already approved it.
“But before it is forwarded to NUC for further action, we feel as a matter of respect and protocol to come and have a formal discussion with the Hon, Minister before our letter is received,” he said.
When NUC finally approves the upgrade, the FRSC Academy, which is the first and only road safety academy in Africa for the training of road safety officers, would also be the first degree-awarding institution in that field.
