Health research institute launched in Abuja
The Federal Ministry of Health has launched the Medical Research Foundation with a view to funding health medical research across the country.
The foundation was launched in Abuja, during the national workshop on strengthening health research capacity organized by the Medical Research Institute.
The foundation is a public private initiative that focusses on funding of medical research and development.
It is expected that private stakeholders would contribute immensely to the development of medical research in Nigeria.
Speaking at the event, the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, represented by the Director, Public Health, Dr. Evelyn Ngige, said that health research is critical to the economic growth and development of the country.
The minister said, “role of research cannot be overemphasized especially in a developing nation with a rapidly increasing population like Nigeria that is faced with a lot of challenges especially in health, medicine, agriculture, economy, and infrastructure development.”
Adewole expressed determination to provide necessary support to medical research in Nigeria.
"We in the Federal Ministry of Health will not rest on our effort to provide the enabling environment for the improvement of health and wellbeing of Nigerians”, he said.
Earlier, the Director General, Nigerian Institute of Medical Research, Dr. Babatunbe Salako, said that the foundation was an opportunity for private sector to contribute in medical research in Nigeria especially now that government has a lot to offer.
