NANS flays N32,000 acceptance fee by Ibadan Poly
The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has frowned at what it described as the “deliberate fraudulent extortion of new intakes by the management of the Polytechnic Ibadan.”
NANS, in a statement by its spokesperson, Comrade Adeyemi Azeez, rejected “in totality the astronomical and obnoxious charge of N32,000 on newly admitted students into the polytechnic of Ibadan, fraudulently defined as acceptance fee.”
“It will interest the management of the polytechnic Ibadan and the general public at large to know, that the national leadership of NANS, in its determined bid towards assuring a better and affordable educational status for students, met with the Hon minister for Education in company of the permanent secretary and the departmental directors in the ministry on the 18th of October, 2018 in Abuja, to address issues that threatens the welfare of Nigerian students within and outside our campuses.
“Interestingly, one of the major issues raised and resolved at the meeting, was the regular abstract charges of acceptance fee by schools. The authorities at the Federal Ministry of Education, collectively denied having knowledge of such charges from school authorities, whereby the permanent secretary for education declared such charges as total and deliberate fraud.
“In which the permanent secretary, on behalf of the ministry urged NANS leadership to henceforth reject such,” the student body said.
The statement noted that NANS President, Comrade DANIELSON Akpan, has directed that the management of the polytechnic of Ibadan, urgently withdraw the acceptance charges of N32,000, warning that the polytechnic should not attempt an increase of the tuition fee from what was paid last session.
NANS noted that it cannot afford to watch access to education being taken away from the sons and daughters of the poor, warning that any attempt by the management of the polytechnic Ibadan to negate its directives, its national leadership shall relocate its secretariat to Ibadan polytechnic.
