FGC Minna wins FUCs maiden football competition

Federal Government College (FGC) Minna has won the maiden edition of the Federal Government Colleges Football Competition in the male category after beating FGC Sokoto 4-2 in regulation time.

Goals from top scorer, Emmanuel Ode, and his teammates helped FGC Minna to emerge victorious in the competition, which was held at the Federal Government Academy, Suleja, Sports Ground.

Queens College Lagos also won the female category of the tournament, after defeating Federal Government Girls College Abaji 4-2 on penalties.

Ode emerged the highest goal scorer in male football category with 6 goals, while Igweze Hope Chinelo of Federal Government Girls College, Abaji scored five goals. Both rewarded with cash prizes of N50,000 each.

Gold Medals were presented to students of Federal Government College, Minna, Niger State and Queens College Yaba, Lagos for winning the first position in male and female soccer competitions respectively.

Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu, who was represented at the event by the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr Sonny Echono, said the competition served as the avenue for developing the students physically, mentally and socially.

Adamu used the occasion warned students across the country against involvement in cultism, drug abuse and other anti-social behaviours that would be detrimental to their lives. 

While urging the students to engage in sports and other extra-curricular activities, the minister advised them to improve on their academic performance in order to excel in life, even as he pledged the commitment of government to sustain the development of sports in schools across the country.

Earlier, the Director, Education Support Services, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Justina Ibe, said the sporting competition forged unity and peaceful co-existence among the students.

Ibe said the zonal football competition of the Ministry was borne out of the desire to lay a solid foundation for the grooming of strong and formidable team that could be become the future Nigeria national team players.
