2019: FCT NANS dissociates self from Buhari’s endorsement
The Abuja chapter of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has dissociated itself from the purported endorsement of President Muhammadu Buhari by its national body last Friday.
In a strong-worded communique issued after its meeting over the weekend in Abuja, the FCT students described the alleged endorsement and promise to provide 20 million votes for the President during the election as a misplaced priority by the national leadership of NANS.
Chairman of FCT NANS, Comrade Mojeed Kolawole Omolaja, and Secretary, Babatunde Micheal, who jointly signed the communique, urged Nigerians to disregard the allusions by NANS National President, Comrade Danielson Akpan.
"The attention of the FCT chapter of NANS has been been drawn to the latest hullabaloo making the rounds that the National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, is becoming partisan rather than press home its demand as a pressure group within the political space.
"The FCT NANS' Joint Campus Committee (JCC) hereby distances itself from the visit paid to the President on the 3rd of January 2019 during which the NANS national leadership, pledged to rally a total of 20 million votes in support of the candidacy of a particular president.
"We wish to state here equivocally that NANS as a body of students of tertiary institutions in the country, was birthed to promote the interests of the students using appropriate avenue(s),” the communique read in part.
The FCT NANS leadership used the medium to assure FCT students that their wellbeing will not be traded, maintaining that they will always stand by the truth.
“NANS is meant to be a voice to the voiceless, an ear to the deaf and an eye to the blind. But however, what we have at the level of our national body is the use of our hallowed body to promote self-minded interests and ventures.
"The FCT leadership of NANS is using this auspicious moment to inform the FCT students that their well-being will not be traded while affirming to them too that the axis will always stand by truth," the body noted.
