SEB to partner AUST on Mathematics

As part of efforts to address the phobia associated with mathematics and ensure that students of FCT senior secondary schools catch up with information and communication technology system, the FCT Secondary Education Board has sought the collaboration of African University of Science and Technology, AUST, to train senior secondary school teachers in mathematics and ICT.

Chairman of the board, Hon Yahaya Muhammad, said the board is desirous of enhancing the teaching and learning process and adopt a lasting and effective academic intervention to improve the low performance in mathematics by senior secondary school students beginning with those preparing for the West Africa Examination Council, WAEC, and National Examination Council, NECO.

Muhammad also said the board is saddled with the mandate of educational responsibilities to continue to provide and sustain quality service delivery in the Federal Capital Territory and to ensure the education system is not compromised regardless of any prevailing challenges.

He stated that his visit to AUST is to formally seek fruitful partnership with the institute in the area of intensive and result-oriented training to help teachers know the techniques in solving and answering questions, applying it through practical and effective teaching of the students as far as standardized questions are concerned.

Muhammed explained that with the partnership strategy with AUST, the board is set to launch a vigorous campaign against mathematics phobia among the students.

In his response, acting president of AUST, Prof Charles Chidume, commended the board’s initiative of desiring to give the teachers and students under their custody the best opportunity towards laying a good foundation for their future career.

Chidume stated further that the board is in the right direction to equip teachers who will in turn empower their students.
