Bello commissions garri processing center in Kwali

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Malam Muhammad Bello, has commissioned cassava processing centre in Kwali area council. 

Bello, who was represented by the Mandate Secretary Agriculture and Rural Development Secretariat, Mr. Stanley Nzekwe, said the present administration would continue to empower farmers to increase food efficiency in the country. 

He tasked the beneficiaries to make good use of the centre with a view to boosting economic activities in the nation's capital.

The minister told the gathering that last year, hundreds of farmers have used their proceeds to go for Hajj pilgrimage in Saudi Arabia, noting that the government of President Muhammadu Buhari had make agriculture more lucrative business. 

Bello noted that FCT Administration would conduct capacity building training for various groups of farmers on modern farming techniques on rice and sorghum, just as he encouraged planting of trees in public places. 

The minister assured farmers that the federal government would soon distribute fertilizer to farmers, adding that any nation that failed to feed itself is in serious crisis. 

Earlier, the FCT Acting Project Coordinator of Fadama 111, Mr. Rotimi Ajayi said the centre was built by National Association of Nigerian Traders, NANTS, in collaboration with FCT Fadama 111 additional financing. 

Ajayi expressed optimism that the project would enhance their income as well as improve the life style of members in the FCT and the nation at large. 

He disclosed that the centre has the capacity of processing eight trucks of cassava per day which was constructed by the women wing of NANTS to increase the quality of garri processing. 

Contributing, chairman of the council, Hon. Joseph Shazin, said that his administration attaches importance to skills acquisition and empowerment programme, even as he stressed commitment to sustain the counterpart fund to Fadama projects in the council.
