AMMC to subject ‘aged buildings’ to integrity test

The Abuja Metropolitan Management Council, AMMC, has given the indication that it will subject all aged buildings around the metropolis to rigorous integrity test, as part of precautionary measure to mitigate building collapse in the territory. 

Coordinator of AMMC, Umar Shaibu, disclosed this last week when he presented an interim report on a former hotel building that collapsed in Gimbiya Street. 

He revealed that the deserted three-storied building collapsed wad without any casualty, but noted that the compulsory integrity test was not just over due, but very necessary to prevent the reoccurring incidences of building collapse.  

"Integrity test would be conducted on aged buildings in and around the city metropolis so as to enable us identify which building should be reconstructed or rehabilitated." 

He noted that while many developers have failed to obey the council's earlier directives to conduct integrity test on all buildings abandoned for over three years period, he explained that only 8 developers have complied with the directive. 

On the collapsed building, he explained that the developers did not stick to the details in the re-decoration order which the council issued, but went ahead to illegally start evacuation of column bases erected on the structure. 

According to him, "the developer will be sanctioned for undertaking major renovation work without seeking for approval from Development Control Department and exceeding the scope of work issued to him for in or redecoration 

"The developer hoarded the premises to prevent access and concealed ongoing works. Sudden crumbles of the structure may signify an overload on the structural members exceeds its ultimate loading capacity as a result of the replacement of building elements that heavier than the existing ones before operation."
