Accredited FCT schools get certificate

As part of efforts to make education a priority with adequate access and qualitative for its teeming school age in the Federal Capital Territory, the Secretary for Education, Dr Bala Liman, presented certificates of accreditation to 84 schools in FCT.

Explaining the process before presenting the schools to the secretary, the acting director of Department of Quality Assurance, Alhaji Salihu Yahaya, said it is an ongoing process of the 13 batch accreditation exercise conducted last year upon receipt of applications and payments from schools that are due for the exercise.

He said seasoned evaluators from a wide range of educational organisations are to ensure credibility and transparency while adhere strictly to the required minimum standards.

Yahaya added that, it involves an assessment of the schools in four thematic areas of physical facilities and environment, staffing, curriculum and academic activities as well as support services and welfare.

Speaking during the  event, Liman said a total of 110 schools were assessed in the 13 batch accreditation comprising 22 public schools and 88 private schools, out of which,84 schools measured up to the required standards .

He said, from the report he received, many schools are challenged by poor record keeping and other critical aspects of school management, which is impacting negatively on ability to fulfill some accreditation requirements as well as on the running of the schools.

He therefore directed the Department of Quality Assurance to embark on comprehensive sensitization programme to create awareness on the modalities and requirements of the exercise and improve on their standards.

Responding on behalf of the accredited schools, Muazu Omeji of Nigeria Tulip International College described the accreditation process as rigorous and successful, just as he thanked the secretariat for ensuring education in FCT is accessible and qualitative in the teaching and learning process.
