Uniabuja organises lecture on good governance at grassroots
The Department of Political Science and International Relations, University of Abuja, has recently held its second quarterly development forum with a theme "local government restructuring, corruption and governance in Nigeria."
Speaking at the event, the lead discussant and Country Director, Plan Nigeria, Dr. Hussaini Abdu, harped on the values of local government as a tier, noting that its existence bring government closer to the people at the grassroots level.
He noted that financial autonomy to the third tier of government would enhance productivity and promote federal system and democracy.
Abdu called for strengthening of state electoral commissions, even he criticised the calls in some quarters agitating for Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, to shoulder the responsibility of conduct of elections at the local government levels.
On his part, the HOD Department of Political Science, UniAbuja, Prof. James Jacob, reiterated commitment to sustain the programme in view of its importance in the area of contributing to ongoing national discourse for agenda setting on the need for transparent and accountable governance.
Other dignitaries who graced the occasion include the Dean Faculty of Social Science UniAbuja, Prof. Yusuf Zoaka, Project Manager SCRAP-C Action Aid Nigeria, Mr. Newton Otsemeye and Secretary General Alliance for Credible Elections, Ms Nma Odi among others.
