Storm blows off GSS Bwari hostel roofs

Casualty was averted in Government Secondary School Bwari, a co-educational boarding facility in the Federal Capital Territory, following heavy downpour, last week.

Students of GSS Bwari were on Sallah break when the incident happened.

The Wednesday downpour which started in parts of Abuja very early in the morning lasted for several hours.

When our correspondent visited the school, roofs of about three hostels were completely blown off, the wreckage of the hostels were yet to be evacuated, as wet mattresses were brought out to dry before the students return.

Our correspondent report that the school had no electricity supply as at the time of visit as electricity poles were broken with naked wires lying on the ground.

Some trees that would have served as wind breakers were broken in pieces while some were uprooted by the wind.

Part of the perimeter fence of the school was equally brought down leaving the school susceptible to other elements and putting safety of students in jeopardy.

The fence of the female hostel section too was completely brought down.

Chairman, FCT Education Board, Malam Yahaya Mohammed, in company of Chief Sunny Moniedafe, member of the board, were on ground for on-the-spot assessment.

Mohammed said described the incident as an emergency and promised quick remedy to the situation.

He said they will as a matter of urgency roll out tree planting campaign in FCT schools to mitigate the effects of storms and prevent further occurrence.

Principal of the school, Dr. Favour Edem, who conducted the board chairman and journalists around, was thankful to God that students were not in the hostels.

She was full of appreciation for the prompt response of the board and pleaded for immediate action.

Edem said on their part they are trying to remedy the female hostel fence before the students returned.
