NDDC: why NANS is pushing for Braimbafa’s confirmation- Akpan

The National Association of Nigerian Students, NANS, has called for the confirmation of Prof Nelson Braimbafa as the substantive Managing Director of Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC.

Speaking at a news conference in Abuja, the National President of NANS, Mr. Danielson Akpan, said the association is collating signatures of its members to forward to President Muhammadu Buhari for his confirmation.

Akpan noted that since Buhari appointed Braimbafa in acting capacity on January 25, 2019, he has implemented several student-friendly policies, including the award of postgraduate scholarships and regular payment of bursaries.

While praising the President for his effort at reaching rural citizens of the Niger Delta region, he said appointing Braimbafa would complement government’s robust economic, security, education and infrastructural programmes in the region.

“We urge President Muhammadu Buhari to consider appointing Prof Braimbafa in substantive capacity now that his policies have added to the success of his government’s effort at reaching rural citizens of the Niger- Delta region.

“Despite being in acting capacity, Prof. Braimbafa has been able to integrate and deliver on the mandates of the commission. Peace has returned to the once tense region; his ability to dialogue with all stakeholders and laying a solid and effective team remains uncompromising.

“Bursaries and scholarships have been attended to and continuous, relative peace has returned and people centred leadership is demonstrated. The commission no doubt is renewed. Contractors are now paid promptly thereby increasing efficiency and delivery of projects/interventions on time,” he said.

According to Akpan, members of NANS were benefiting from the social plan of the commission, adding that if bursaries and scholarships are regular, undergraduates and those acquiring skills will be assisted.

He further called on the President to appoint only efficient hands who will help implement his policies and fulfil his campaign promises, adding that even in his cabinet, Nigeria needs a blend of efficient and patriotic hands.

“As a listening president, we are sure he will act again as he did when he approved about N200 billion intervention fund for higher institutions after our request to him on January 3.”
