Netherlands seeks Nigeria’s partnership on education

The Dutch Government has expressed desire to collaborate with Nigeria’s Ministry of Education on specific areas of manpower needs which the country may identify.

Speaking during a visit to the ministry of education in Abuja, Team Leader, Partnership and Programme Development of the Netherlands Ministry of Education, Mr. David Van Kampan, said scholarships were also in the options to offer more Nigerians opportunity to study in the Netherlands.

Van Kampan said when the partnership is forged, the Dutch education officials could visit the country to provide specific capacity building to Nigerians on the country’s areas of needs.

According to him, collaboration between Nigeria and the Netherlands was necessary for the two countries to share knowledge, and foster mutual relationship.

He said the efforts were driven by NUFFIC Netherlands, a Dutch organisation for the Netherlands education, which plays an important role in fostering international cooperation in education between the Netherlands and other countries.

Responding, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Mr. Sonny Echono, expressed the ministry’s readiness to partner with the Dutch organization to share best practices and ideas.

Echono noted that Nigeria was in need of the collaboration for massive training of teachers and human development that would in turn be geared toward the advancement of the sector.

He highlighted other aspect of the collaboration to include exchange of students in long and short-term programme, education management information, exchange visit, and study and lecture tour of universities’ professors.

Others are awards of full scholarship to students and graduates, to study in each other’s institutions; and encourage sponsored students to study in each other’s country.

He however noted that Nigeria was yet to sign a memorandum of understanding with the Netherland on educational cooperation even though the document has been drafted already.

Echono added that effort would be made in collaboration with the Dutch Embassy in Abuja for the document to be signed.
