FG sets up committee on education funding

A presidential committee on sustainable funding of education has been set up by the Federal Government to address lapses in funding education at all levels in the country.

Inaugurating the committee in Abuja, the Permanent Secretary, Federal Ministry of Education, Arc. Sonny Echono, enjoined members to seek ways of addressing funding challenges at all levels with a view to repositioning education in Nigeria.

A statement by the Deputy Director of Press at the ministry, Mr. Ben Goong, said the inauguration was a fallout of the communique issued at the end of stakeholders workshop on sustainable funding for education in Nigeria held at the State House Conference Centre, Abuja, from 27th – 28th November, 2018.

Earlier, in the year, President Muhammadu Buhari had directed former Education Minister, Malam Adamu Adamu, to come up with innovative ways of sustainable funding for education in the country.

Meanwhile, Echono who doubles as the chairman of the committee said the responsibility of sustainable funding of education is a national assignment that must be taken seriously, adding that his committee will approach the assignment with all the seriousness its deserves.

He urged the committee to seek for clear and workable ideas, innovations and suggestions on the best funding model for education in Nigeria.

The committee has three weeks within which to submit its report to the Minister of Education.
