Non-academic staff of universities begin warning strike this week

Barring any change of plans, the Non- Academic Staff of Nigerian Universities would embark a one-week industrial action this week, beginning from Monday, August 19th

The staff, under the aegis of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, and Non-Academic Staff Union of Universities, NASU, issued the threat last Friday in a letter signed by the chairman of its Joint Action Congress, JAC, Comrade Samson Ugwoke.

Ugwoke said the one-week strike follows a 14-day ultimatum earlier given to the federal government, warning that the strike will commence on Monday until their demands to the government are met.

According to the letter, the warning strike was aimed at pushing the federal government to meet their demands, which include payment of earned allowances, University Staff Schools matter, renegotiation of 2019 FGN/Unions agreement among others.

The union said the warning strike would be nationwide, while calling on its members in all branches to comply with the directive as defaulters would be sanctioned accordingly.

“At expiration of the 14-day ultimatum, Sunday 18 August 2019, without a positive response from the Federal Government of Nigeria, members shall proceed on a 5-day warning strike in all Branches from Monday 19th to Friday 23rd August 2019.

“You are therefore directed to properly mobilize our members for this action. All defaulting branches shall be sanctioned accordingly. Please be guided,” the letter read in part.
