FCDA to demolish 850 shanties in Gwarimpa

As part of efforts to permanently tackle the traffic situation within Gwarinpa, the FCT Administration has said that it would remove no fewer than 850 batchers and shanties along N16 road.

N16 road is an arterial road that stretches from 3rd Avenue in Gwarinpa, through Gishiri Village to NICON Junction, which when constructed would free up traffic from other roads in and out of Gwarinpa District.

Director, department of Development Control, Muktar Galadima, made this disclosure during marking of the affected shanties in Gwarinpa.

“There are encroachments on that arterial road and we have directive from the Minister, Malam Muhammad Bello to remove them so we need to nip them in the bud before they turn into what people will begin to claim right of ownership for.”

Galadima further revealed that his men would remove the shanties and clear the road corridor within the next three months.

Deputy Director, Monitoring and Enforcement in the department, Garba Kwamkur, who was part of the exercise said that the department was given marching orders to rid the Territory of illegalities and they were doing everything possible to keep Abuja in line with international best standards.

Kwamkur also stated that, after clearing the shanties, the road would be leveled to enable people to use it in a temporary basis even before award of contract for its construction.

According to him, the exercise was a continuous one which would be extended to other areas including Apo, Gudu and Kubwa, among others.
