Nassrawa: Sule solicits FG’s assistance for IDPs

Nasarawa State Governor, Engr. Abdullahi Suleiman, has called on the Federal Government to provide continuous support to his state in its efforts to provide intervention for internally displaced persons, IDPs.

Suleiman, who made the call when he paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajiya Sadiya Faruk, in Abuja, specifically requested support in the rehabilitation and reintegration of IDPs in Nassarawa State.

"We still request more assistance that special kind of intervention to continue to support the people of Nassarawa State.

" We will continue to do our best because some of this people are having difficulties in going back to their place, these are people who come from Benue and southern Kaduna and we are trying our best as much as possible to relocate them back to their communities,” he said.

The governor disclosed that since the symbolic closure of all IDP camps in the state, the state government has been doing a lot to enable them rebuild their homes and start life again.

“We are committed to ensuring that the peace we have restored to Nassarawa is consolidated. Peace cannot be fully consolidated without taking care of those that were displaced and disoriented. We want to see that they are comfortable in their original abodes and have means of livelihood so that they can forget the trauma of the past as they heal,” he said.

Responding, the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Faruk, assured the governor of the ministry's full support.

“I can assure you that we have the talent, the passion and resilience and the capacity to deliver so as a result of that, we have taken note of your observations of this visit,” she said.

The minister noted that the mandate of her ministry was to develop humanitarian policies and provide effective coordination of National and International humanitarian interventions.

According to Farouk, the ministry also ensures strategic disaster mitigation, preparedness and response; and manage the formulation and implementation of equity focused social inclusion and protection programmes in Nigeria.

She said her ministry was keen on data driven decision making which helps in resource management and targeted interventions.

“In addition, we are keen to provide input to the development of the logical framework, in particular for the North East,” she said.
