Gunmen abduct council vice-chairman, others in Pegi

Gunmen suspected to be kidnappers again stormed Pegi Community last night, where they abducted the former Vice-Chairman of Kuje Area Council, Mr. Mohammed Baba, alongside several other members of the council's legislative arm.

 

 

 

 

Other victims of the latest kidnap in the community include the Kwakwu ward councilor, the Transport Officer, Special Assistant, Media, Head of Department, Food Services among other political aides.

 

 

 

The Chairman of Pegi Community Development Association, PECDA, Mr. Taiwo Aderibigbe, who confirmed the incident on phone , said the victims' identities might not be ascertained at the moment, but promised to update the media as soon as he was properly briefed.

 

 

 

It gathered that the victims' bus was hijacked and took to bush while coming back from the office of the new Education Secretary of the council, Mr. Yunusa Zakari, after congratulating him.

 

 

 

This abduction is latest in the series of attacks on Pegi community in recent times. Recall that two members of the community were kidnapped and one critically injured when gunmen attack commuters on the Pegi-Kuje road. A 12 year old boy, officer of the Nigerian Security and Civil Defence Corps and several victims were earlier abducted in October 2019.

 

 

 

Meanwhile, the FCT Minister of State, Dr. Ramatu Aliyu, has condemned in a strong terms the abduction, describing the incident as unfortunate and heinous.

 

 

 

The minister regretted that the cases of abductions have become rampant especially in Kuje area council of the territory.  

 

 

 

The minister in a statement by her Special Adviser on Media, Mr. Austin  Elemue, assured residents that the FCT Administration would take drastic measures to address the situation. She also appealed to residents to remain calm as efforts are place to recover all victims of kidnappers.  

 

 

 

"It is regrettable and unfortunate that we are still having cases of abductions and kidnappings of innocent citizens in the Federal Capital Territory. It is regrettable because this is the seat of government and we must do everything possible to put to an end this senseless killings and abductions of residents in the territory.  

 

 

 

"However, I want to appeal to residents especially those in the area councils to remain calm, as the FCT Administration under the leadership of Malam Muhammad Musa Bello, is working assiduously to protect lives and property of residents. I want to assure you that the security agencies are on top of the situation," the minister stated.
