NDI partners NGO on voter education for IDPs

The National Democratic Institute, NDI, in conjunction with a home based NGO, Community Links and Human Empowerment Initiative has held a capacity training on voter education for IDPs in Benue state.

The two-day capacity training had in attendance all camp officers in charge of the various camps in the state.

Addressing the participants, senior programme manager of NDI, Annabel Ugwoke, said the training of IDPs was to ensure their fundamental human rights to vote was not trampled upon in the 2019 general elections.

She said the objectives of the training was to build the capacity of the home based NGO to be able to run a voter education campaign for IDPs ahead of the 2019 general elections.

Ugwoke said the training would help build the capacity of IDPs coordinators to step down the voter education training to IDPs in the 11 camps and host communities.

The programme manager explained that the programme would develop a strategy document for the implementation of the "get-out-the-vote” campaigns.

She said NDI has decided to intensify voter education at the grassroots as part of efforts to discourage vote-buying and hawking during the 2019 elections.

According to her, vote-buying and hawking was gaining ground largely due to ignorance among voters, saying that voter education remained a potent tool to discourage the practice.

Founder of the home based NGO, Community Links and Health Empowerment Initiative, Mrs Helen Teghtegh, told the participants that the NGO was determined to take voter education to the IDPs’ doorsteps in Benue.

“They don’t like their present condition and have to ensure their voice is heard loud and clear through their votes in the forthcoming elections, so as to ensure their condition is bettered", she added.

Also speaking, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for INEC in Benue, Engr Nentawe Yelwatda, said INEC has put in place seamless electoral process that will ensure that no eligible voter at the IDP camps is disenfranchised in the forthcoming general elections.

He said the commission has made special arrangements for the IDPs and as from January enumeration of eligible voters will be concluded from ward to ward on each camp.
