Ameachi, Soyinka, others hail Buhari for over Iju-Abekuota rail line
The Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Ameachi, has noted that the Iju-Abekouta-Ibadan rail line is simply to boost business and industrial activities within the axis which was part of the promises made by President Muhamadu Buhari in 2015.
Ameachi made this disclosure during the test-run of the rail track, declaring that he feels fulfilled that the promise has become a reality.
He said: “We are glad to put this train on the track to convey passengers, three months free of charge. The gauge is not the first.
“The first is Itakpe-Warri. That is the first standard gauge in Nigeria. But, this is the third. Because the kaduna-Abuja is the second and this is the third. Your governor said this is the first tunnel in Ogun state and it is true. There are two tunnels. There is one that the narrow gauge crosses the standard gauge. That is a tunnel. And this is the second one here. The third one will be in Ibadan where we are trying to cross the major road in Ibadan.
‘’But, I want to thank you. And believe me, this is free of charge and you are not going to pay for it. And I know you want us to take this to Ibadan, Kano, then vote APC. That is all we are asking for.
“For those who wants to work from Abekuota, they can leave in the morning and when they close from work in the evening, they will join the train at Iju to Abekuota. While we are working from Ebute-Metta to Apapa that way it will be easier for you to go to work up to Ebute-Metta to Apapa. We are also trying to build our stations. And in a year time, we would have finished the stations. And, it will be running normally. And you will be able to pay your money after three months’’, he stated.
The Nobel laureate, Professor Wole Soyinka, who was on ground for the test-run, said that this is not a political vote gathering occasion but however said he is glad that this project is allowed to see the light of the day irrespective of the government.
