Covid- 19 : FG distributes take-home rations to pupils in FCT
The Federal Government has commenced the distribution of take-home rations to vulnerable pupils in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, to cushion the impact of covid-19.
Minister of Humanitarian Affairs, Disaster Management and Social Development, Hajia Sadiya Umar Farouq, who kicked off the programme in Kuje Area Council on Thursday, said the initiative is targeted at feeding a total of 3.1 million households.
Farouq said Lagos and Ogun states were next in the line of implentation of of the programme before it is moved to other states of the federation.
"Worthy to note is we are working with the World Food programme, providing technical support while other agencies of government have been invited to provide an extra layer of monitoring.
"Lagos and Ogun states are next ports of call before the programme moves to other states of the Federation," the minister said.
Also speaking, the Country Director of World Food programme, Paul Howe, noted that covid-19 has been a set back to the world food programme and has caused more hunger and challenges for the population.
Howe added that it was critical for the leasdership to bring a whole society approach to address this challenges.
In her remarks, the FCT Minister of State, Hajiya Ramatu Tijaini Aliyu, who was represented by Mrs Chinwendu Etemyen, said the essence of the take-home rations was to ensure that school pupils do not look malnourished before the resumption date.
A beneficiary of the programme, Dantani kaura, appreciated the government for rembering parents and guardians, stating that the uncooked food will go a long way in assisting him to feed his family.
To ensure that there was no theft of the food items, the ministry is using government agencies such as the DSS, EFCC, ICPC, Code of Conduct Bureau and a host of NGOs and CSOs to provide an extra layer of monitoring.
Farouq used the occasion to appreciate the support of NGOs including Wimbiz, Waterlight initiative, AU ECOSOC, Orphans and women support initiative, Youth fighters for covid-19, Nigerian red cross, Coalition of NGOs and CSOs against covid-19, Africa global empowerment and development network and a host others.
