President Bola Tinubu has described the reopening of commercial operations at the Abuja Rail Mass Transit as a symbol of progress and connectivity.

Tinubu, who stated this during the official flag-off of commercial activities at the train station on Tuesday, said the infrastructural revolution going on in the Federal Capital Territory is a demonstration of the fulfilment of promises by the government of the day.

It signifies our determination to modernise our transportation infrastructure, reduce traffic congestion in the city, and enhance accessibility to all residents, be it visitors within and outside Abuja.

“Today, what we have in the Federal Capital Territory is another piece of evidence that we are a government that delivers on promises. I observe keenly other milestones that this administration has achieved, especially in the areas of social services and other public utilities.”

The president who extended the two months free trips initially promised commuters to six months, also commended the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, for the swift rehabilitation of vandalized rail tracks and the timely provision of access roads to all seven railway stations and bringing them to life with modern infrastructure.

“This accomplishment by the FCT Administration is a demonstration of serious commitment to value, the charge that we all should embrace in this country. Mr Project, I say thank you very much to you and your team. In keeping with the ideals of the Renewed Hope Agenda, you have with your team, demonstrated an unusual capacity to include people. Thank you very much once again.

“The huge investment you’ve saved and put on this project is there for the people to remember. Transportation gives hope and access to the various individuals and organisations. But here we are, at the last review, the access roads to the various stations on the route, is not done. It is all about service, you are proud to serve your motherland, thank you.”

Speaking earlier, the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, acknowledged the transportation challenges faced by Abuja residents and reaffirmed his commitment to transforming the situation.

“We are aware of the difficulties residents face in commuting and are dedicated to providing a modern transportation system to ease their burden,” Wike stated.

He explained that the rehabilitation of the ARMT, also known as the Abuja Metro Line, was awarded at $30 million dollars in 2018. He however, added that the fund was not released until Tinubu gave the directive in September 2023 that he wants to ride on the metro line.

He said that based on the directive, he ran to the Central Bank of Nigerian, Minister of Finance and Accountant General of the Federation.

He said that the institutions made available the fund to the contractor, and nine months after, the rehabilitation was completed and ready for operation.

Wike added that access roads were also constructed to all the 12 train stations, including car parks at N21.4 billion.

“As I speak to you today, all those roads have been completed for people to use to the various train stations.”

Delivering her vote of thanks, the FCT Minister of State, Dr Mariya Mahmoud, said that the inauguration was a testament to the power of collaboration and determination in bringing about positive change.
