Police disperse pro-Natasha protesters in Abuja

Supporters of Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, stormed premises of the National Assembly complex demanding the resignation of Senate President, Godswill Akpabio.

The protesters blocked the entrance of the National Assembly early Wednesday morning chanting solidarity songs and bearing placards with inscriptions like “Akpabio Must Go”, “Protect Women’s Rights”, “We Stand With Senator Natasha” to show their support for the Senator representing Kogi Central Senatorial District.

However, men of the Nigeria Police later dispersed the supporters to avoid them disrupting plenary and the scheduled hearing of the Senate Committee on Ethics, Privileges, and Public Petitions.

The officers deployed tear gas to disperse the crowd, forcing them to relocate to the Unity Fountain to continue their demonstration.

The protest comes amid rising tensions following a February 20, 2025 clash between Akpoti-Uduaghan and Senate President Godswill Akpabio over seating arrangements in the Senate chamber. The disagreement led to her referral to the Senate’s ethics committee.

Akpoti-Uduaghan later accused the Senate President of sexual harassment and claimed she was being targeted because she rejected his advances — an allegation that has further fueled public scrutiny.
