…DRTS warns of touts exploiting vehicle owners

In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Directorate attributed the ongoing shortage to “irregular and insufficient supply from the National Vehicle Identification Scheme, NVIS, Plant,” stressing that the situation is being addressed.
The Directorate of Road Traffic Services, DRTS, in the Federal Capital Territory has raised alarm over the activities of fraudsters and touts exploiting vehicle owners amid a scarcity of number plates in Abuja.
The DRTS also drew the attention of the motoring public to the activities of fraudsters impersonating DRTS officials in the attempt to take advantage of the situation to exploit vehicle owners.
The statement signed by the Director of the service, Abdulateef Bello, on behalf of the management, firmly disassociated the DRTS from the illegality and advised the public against, “dealing with any individual either Staff or Agent who claim to be in position of number plates outside what is uploaded in the DRTS self-service portal (https://selfservice.fctevreg.com).
“Moreover, in order to ensure transparency, the approved costs of number plates and related services are readily available on our official communication platforms, and particularly our website.”
To combat the growing black market, the agency said it is working closely with security agencies to track down and prosecute impostors involved in the illegal sale of number plates.
“In collaboration with the Security Agencies, the Directorate has intensified efforts to bring these impostors to justice.”
The DRTS also encouraged residents to report any suspicious individuals or illicit activity related to vehicle registration, reiterating its commitment to transparent and accountable service delivery.
“We urge the public to report suspicious individuals or illegal activities to the Management of the DRTS.”
