Construction firm, Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, has commenced work on the ₦39.3bn Otovwodo Flyover project in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State.
The project was flagged off by the Delta State Governor, Sheriff Oborevwori, who said the flyover would provide a lasting solution to the persistent traffic congestion at the Otovwodo Junction along the East–West Road.
Speaking at the ceremony, Oborevwori said the project aligned with his administration’s infrastructure renewal agenda aimed at improving connectivity, reducing travel time and boosting economic activities across the state.
He noted that rapid population growth in Ughelli had overstretched the existing road network, turning the Otovwodo Junction into a major traffic bottleneck that costs commuters several productive hours daily.
The governor added that as interim measures, the state government had earlier constructed alternative routes, including Uduere, Okogbe, Oru and Edo streets, as well as Royal Avenue linking Agbarha-Otor Road, to ease traffic pressure ahead of the flyover construction.
In his remarks, the Managing Director of Julius Berger Nigeria Plc, Engr. Dr. Peer Lubasch, thanked the Delta State Government for the confidence reposed in the company, describing the contract as a validation of its technical expertise and partnership with the state.
Lubasch said the project would comprise a 15-span reinforced concrete flyover designed as a dual carriageway, with associated road networks, drainage systems, a roundabout and solar-powered street lighting, adding that the project is expected to be completed within 12 months.
He assured residents that the company would deliver the project to high standards of quality and safety while minimising disruption during construction and appealed for the cooperation of the host communities.
The flag-off ceremony was attended by royal fathers, community leaders, members of the State Executive Council, as well as lawmakers from the Delta State House of Assembly and the National Assembly.
