Wike defends N39bn ICC renovation, dares critics to visit Abuja

Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has dismissed criticism over the N39 billion spent on renovating the International Conference Centre in Abuja, insisting the project reflects Nigeria’s status as the giant of Africa.

Wike, who spoke during the commissioning of the Left-Hand Service Carriageway of the Outer Southern Expressway, OSEX, from Apo to Wasa, used the occasion to respond to critics who questioned the renovation cost and renaming of the ICC after President Bola Tinubu.

Critics, including opposition figures such as Peter Obi and Shehu Sani, have described the renovation as extravagant and ill-timed, calling it a misplaced priority in the face of economic hardship.

But Wike defended the project as thorough and necessary, saying only the blockwork of the centre remained untouched.

“You know, there are people naturally, they don’t have good taste. They don’t have good taste. The only thing in that International Conference Center that was not changed, is just the block.

“Everything in that International Conference Center, everything was changed. If you love this country, you cannot criticize. It’s not about I wear only one shoe, telling people lies. It’s a lie. It’s not about, oh, I carry my bag. No.

“Nigeria, as a giant of Africa, must not only show that they are a giant, people must see what makes you to be a giant of Africa. Nobody that loves this country will criticize that International Conference Centre.”

Addressing claims that the facility was originally built for N240 million under the Babangida regime, the minister asked Nigerians to consider the difference in exchange rates between 1991 and 2025.

“Nnamdi Azikiwe Airport wasn’t built by Nnamdi Azikiwe. Moshood Abiola Stadium wasn’t built by Abiola. So what’s wrong with naming ICC after President Tinubu?” He asked.

On social media criticisms and media commentary, Wike was blunt.

“We are not here to please critics. We are here to work. The president has given us the mandate, the funding, and the support to deliver real infrastructure. And that’s what we are doing. If you’re not happy that they named ICC after the president, go and kill yourself. Africa’s population is too high anyway.”

He also took a swipe at former presidential spokesman, Reuben Abati, saying: “If you did not do well to defend your boss when you had opportunity, it’s not our fault. You were there. They were hitting your boss left, right and center. You couldn’t defend your boss. I am here. I will defend my boss. And I have the capacity to defend my boss,” he stated.
