A broadcast journalist with Arise News Channel, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, has been killed in a robbery attack at her residence in the highbrow Katampe area of Abuja.
The incident which occurred in the early hours of Monday, has left colleagues and friends in shock over the death of the 29-year-old anchor, reporter and producer.
Born on December 26, 1995, Maduagwu, fondly called “Sommie” had trained as a lawyer before moving into broadcasting, where she was admired for her eloquence, professionalism and passion for storytelling.
Arise News confirmed her death in a statement, describing her as “a vibrant voice that engaged and connected with our viewers” and “a cherished member of the Arise News family.”
The statement signed by Hadiza Usman-Ajayi on behalf of the management reads, “It is with heavy hearts that the management and staff of the Arise News Channel announce the passing of our beloved colleague, News Anchor, Reporter and Producer, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu.
“Sommie tragically passed away in the early hours of Monday, September 29, 2025, following an armed robbery incident at her residence in Katampe, Abuja, that is being investigated by the Nigeria Police. Sommie’s voice is now silent, but her spirit, passion, and legacy will endure as part of our collective memory. We remain in shock and call for a speedy investigation, apprehension, and prosecution of the culprits.”
Colleagues at Arise News have expressed grief over her death, recalling her warmth, energy and dedication to the newsroom, while tributes also poured in from journalists, viewers and members of the legal community.
Though the police is yet to officially comment on the development, security sources confirmed that an investigation has been launched into the robbery.
