Panic gripped government circles in Bayelsa State on Thursday after the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, reportedly collapsed in his office and was rushed to the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.
The incident occurred at about 1:30pm, causing a stir among staff and prompting an urgent medical evacuation. Eyewitnesses told our correspondent that the deputy governor was in a “serious condition” when he arrived at the hospital’s emergency unit.
Hospital sources said he has since been stabilised and moved to the Intensive Care Unit. Although no official statement has been issued, insiders hinted that the scare might be linked to a cardiac-related emergency.
A top government source who spoke in confidence described Ewhrudjakpo as a relentless worker, adding, “He’s a workaholic. He really needs to rest.”
Security operatives immediately cordoned off the hospital as senior government officials trooped in to show concern. Efforts to get comments from the deputy governor’s media aide, Mr Doubara Atasi, were unsuccessful as calls and messages were not returned.
Medical personnel at FMC, however, told our correspondent that the deputy governor is receiving the best care available and remains stable at the ICU.
