The Government of Canada has announced plans to increase application fees for permanent residence and citizenship, a move that will affect Nigerians and other foreign nationals seeking to migrate to the country.
The new fees are scheduled to take effect from April 30, 2026, according to an official notice issued by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada.
The agency stated that the adjustment is part of a routine review aimed at sustaining efficient service delivery and keeping pace with inflation.
It added that all applications received on or after the effective date will be subject to the revised charges.
Under the updated structure, the Right of Permanent Residence Fee will increase from $575 to $600, while applicants under the Provincial Nominee Programme will pay $990, up from $950.
The Business Class category will rise from $1,810 to $1,895, while the Family Class fee will increase from $545 to $570.
Similarly, fees for protected persons, as well as applications on humanitarian and compassionate grounds, will increase from $635 to $660. Permit holders will also see a rise from $375 to $390.
In addition, the Right of Citizenship Fee will increase slightly from $119.75 to $123, effective March 31, 2026.
Immigration authorities explained that permanent residence fees are reviewed every two years under existing regulations to address rising operational costs and increased demand for services.
The government expressed confidence that the adjustments would help maintain timely and reliable processing of applications while supporting the overall efficiency of the immigration system.
