Julius Berger completes Bodo-Bonny Road

Construction giant Julius Berger Nigeria Plc has completed the 37.9-kilometre Bodo-Bonny Road project in Rivers State, marking a major milestone in efforts to improve connectivity and economic activities in the Niger Delta region.

The Project Manager, Tim Nippert, disclosed this on Monday at the project site in Bodo, saying only ancillary works such as tree planting, streetlight foundation works and pole installations were ongoing.

According to him, the main road project has been completed, while the remaining works are expected to be concluded within two weeks.

“The project is completed. What is outstanding now is tree planting, streetlight foundations and pole installations, especially around the kilometre 12 roundabout,” he said.

Nippert explained that Julius Berger delivered the project within the approved budget despite the difficult terrain and challenging environmental conditions.

He added that savings made from the contract were being used to provide additional infrastructure, including streetlights and beautification works, without extra cost to the government.

“From the contract sum, we made some savings and the ministry awarded us to provide streetlights and do some beautification like tree planting. It is good for the ministry because they do not need to spend more money,” he stated.

The Bodo-Bonny Road project, which commenced in October 2017, is the first road linking Bonny Island to the rest of Rivers State.

Speaking during an inspection of the project in October 2025, the Minister of Works, David Umahi, described the road as a critical infrastructure project that would enhance economic activities and improve access to coastal communities.

Umahi said the project traverses difficult marshy terrain and noted that the quality of work executed by Julius Berger was commendable.

The road features major bridges across Afa Creek, Nanabie Creek and the Opobo Channel, alongside extensive dredging and soil stabilisation works.

Meanwhile, the Federal Government has approved Phase Two of the Bodo-Bonny Road project.

Umahi, represented by the Minister of State for Works, Bello Goronyo, recently said the next phase would further improve connectivity, reduce insecurity and boost commerce across the Niger Delta region.

He described the road as “a bridge to opportunity, a lifeline for commerce and a symbol of national cohesion.”
