The FCT Police Command has rescued two abandoned babies found in separate incidents in Kurudu and Gwagwalada, as it launched efforts to identify their mothers and other family members.
The babies, a boy and a girl, were discovered on Wednesday, after residents in the two communities heard them crying and alerted the police.
A statement by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Josephine Adeh, disclosed that the baby boy was found abandoned in a carton box around Obodo Street, Kurudu, while the baby girl was discovered outside a resident’s gate in Gwagwalada later the same night.
Adeh said the two babies were rescued following the prompt intervention of residents, adding that both babies have been taken for medical assessment and in stable condition.
According to her, a Kurudu resident identified as Mr Innocent reported the discovery at the Kurudu Police Station at about 5:45pm, shortly after hearing the cry of a baby around Obodo Street.
“On Wednesday, 2nd September 2026, at about 5:45 PM, a resident of Kurudu, identified as Mr. Innocent, reported at the Kurudu Police Station that at about 5:30 PM on the same date, while around Obodo Street, Kurudu, he heard the cry of a baby. Upon inspection, he discovered a baby carefully wrapped in a cloth and abandoned in a carton box.
“Upon receipt of the report, Police officers from Kurudu Division alongside officers from the Juveniles and Women Care, JWC, Department of the Division were promptly dispatched to the scene, where a baby boy was found and rescued.”
She said the child was taken to a nearby hospital for medical assessment before being handed over to the Social Welfare Department for further care, while police intensified efforts to determine the circumstances surrounding his abandonment.
In Gwagwalada, Adeh said another resident, Mr Ibrahim, heard a baby crying outside his gate at about 9:40pm on the same day.
Ibrahim, assisted by other concerned residents, rescued the baby and reported the incident at the Gwagwalada Police Station at about 10:15pm.
The baby girl was subsequently taken by officers of the JWC Department to the University of Abuja Teaching Hospital for medical examination, where she is currently receiving care pending her handover to the Social Welfare Department.
The police said investigations were ongoing to unravel the circumstances surrounding both incidents and identify the mothers or other relatives of the babies.
Adeh commended Innocent, Ibrahim and other members of the public who intervened, describing their prompt actions as important in ensuring the babies were rescued and brought to the attention of the police.
The Command also appealed to members of the public with information that could assist in identifying the babies’ mothers or family members to come forward.
