Barely six days after police in the Federal Capital Territory impounded a Lexus LX570 SUV bearing a concealed number plate, the FCT Police Command has again intercepted a vehicle bearing a suspected fake Presidency registration number plate.
The latest incident involved a black Toyota Corolla driven by Mr Agbogun Godson Benard, which was intercepted by police operatives on October 26, 2026, at about 2:35 p.m., following credible intelligence.
The vehicle, bearing registration number M01-997 FG, was taken to the command’s headquarters for discreet investigation.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the Police Public Relations Officer of the FCT Command, SP Josephine Adeh, said the driver could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the source of the registration number during preliminary investigation.
She said, “During preliminary investigation, the driver of the vehicle could not give satisfactory explanation as to the source of the registration number.”
The command said investigations were ongoing to establish the circumstances surrounding the allocation, ownership and use of the registration number, as well as the authenticity of the vehicle’s registration particulars.
The latest interception follows the impounding of a Lexus LX570 SUV in Maitama District on October 20, after police operatives reportedly discovered that it bore a concealed number plate with the inscription “PRESIDENCY.”
In the earlier incident, the police said preliminary investigations revealed that the vehicle’s registration documents were forged and that the suspect was allegedly impersonating a Permanent Secretary attached to the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.
The command had said investigations into the Lexus incident were ongoing, adding that the suspect would be charged to court upon their conclusion.
Meanwhile, the police urged residents to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest police station.
“Residents are urged to remain law-abiding and promptly report suspicious persons or activities to the nearest Police Station or through the Command’s emergency numbers: 08032003913, 08061581938,” the statement added.
