FEMD reopens Galadimawa slip road months after closure

Motorists heading towards the Airport Road from the Goodluck Jonathan Expressway, can now use the reopened slip road at Galadimawa Interchange, following the removal of barricades erected to prevent flooding.
The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department, FEMD, had closed the road on July 7, 2026, as part of measures to mitigate flooding during the rainy season, which regularly leaves the slip road impassable.
FEMD in a statement on Tuesday, said the road was reopened following the end of the rainy season to ease traffic movement around the interchange.
The statement signed by the Head of Public Affairs, Nkechi Isa, explained that the closure was necessary because the slip road experiences flooding annually during the rainy season, which typically begins in Abuja in May.
Director of the Department, Engr. Muhammad Dikko, was quoted to have said that the recurring flooding had made it necessary for the department to barricade the road during the rainy season as a precautionary measure.
Dikko, however, said efforts were ongoing to address the environmental challenges responsible for the flooding, noting that the Federal Capital Development Authority and Engineering Services were working towards a lasting solution.
“These agencies are proactive and are working towards a solution,” he said.
Also speaking, an official of Engineering Services, Engr. Abdulkadir Musa, said the removal of the barricade was intended to reduce traffic congestion along Ring Road II and improve movement for motorists heading towards Airport Road.
“With the opening of the slip road all the traffic heading to the Airport road can now pass through,” Musa said.
He further explained that the reopening would help ease traffic congestion around ISEX/S20, also known as Oladipo Diya Way, where construction work on the road had affected traffic movement.
The reopening restores access to the slip road after nearly four months of closure, while efforts to address the area’s recurring flooding problem continue.
