A Civil Rights Advocate, Comrade Lucy Akumabor, has called on the Inspector General of Police Usman Alkali Baba, to immediately effect the arrest of the Chairman of the Economic, and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Abdulrasheed Bawa.
Recall the EFCC Boss was convicted by a court of competent jurisdiction for Contempt of Court.
Akumabor who made this call over the weekend while speaking to journalists in Abuja, also said the arrest will serve as a deterrent to erring public officials.
According to her, Police should not be seen to be setting double standards with regards to the execution of court judgemejudgmentseria.
Akumabor noted that, with the reforms in the security sector which proposeproposeservance of the rule of law in the execution of duties of the security agencies especially the police which is mandated by law to affect the st of erring and convicted citizens B now one of theolfollowinghe ruling in Suit No: HCL/967m/ 2022 and Motion No: HCL/ 736m/ 2022 where Justice R. O. Agboola ruled that Abdulrasheed Bawa should be committed to prison for Contempt of Court.
She noted that compliance to this ruling is of utmost importance at this time of our democratic progression given the quest to enthrone the observance of the rule of law by this administration against the hitherto penchant by some agencies of government to pick and choose which rulings and court orders to respect.
Nigeria is at a crossroads now and we cannot afford to continue to give the public the impression that there are “sacred cows” in government who are untouchable despite the ruling of a court of competent jurisdiction.
It is on the above premise that I urge you to use your good office to effect the arrest and imprisonment of the EFCC Chairman Abdulrasheed Bawa, to serve as a deterrent not to other erring public servants to know that the system and our judiciary can catch up with them if they abuse the privileges of offices entrusted to them for pthepublicc good. she noted.
