…as group buys N22.5m form for 16th July contest
Ahead of the July 2022 governorship election, Governor Gboyega Oyetola, yesterday, picked his expression of interest and nomination form to contest in the forthcoming primary of the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
The form sold for 22.5milion was purchased on his behalf by a group called “friends of Gboyega “
Leading the members of the group, spokesman of the senate, Ajibola Basiru said they are convinced that the incumbent governor has delivered on the dividend of democracy to Osun State in areas of Infrastructure, Health,Education, Youth Empowerment and Social welfare in the last 3 years and to sustain the achievements the governor deserves reelection while flying high the flag of the APC.
He also noted that the team were buying the form voluntarily, following the public declaration of interest by the governor in the recent traditional meeting in Osun State.
The law maker, responding to questions by journalists on the crisis between Governor Oyetola and his predecessor, Minister for Interior, Rauf Aregbesola, he said,
‘I will not reduce the issue of our party to issue of personality. Political parties are institutions of democracy and they are run on the basis of the structure of the political parties as well as the leaders of the party.
” We believe that the existing structure of our party is such that the party that is really in existence today is the APC and I will give you statistics. Beyond the 2018 election, the first election and the only election that has been conducted under the leadership of Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola is the 2019 general elections and I challenge you to go to INEC website to download.,”
Furthermore, the governor will seek legal advice on how to handle his position in the Caretaker/Extraordinary Planning Convention Committee, CECPC while seeking reelection.
“It’s a legal question and I believe the governor would be availed of the best possible legal advice as to the nature and character of the office visavis the existing provision of the Constitution of the APC.”
On the recent comment made by the former Deputy Speaker of House of Representatives, Lasun Yusuf who is also vying for Osun State gubernatorial ticket in APC, that APC did not win the 2018 elections,
Basiru said “I don’t believe he said that but if indeed he said that something has to be probed in that regard. But I will also tell you, the election was conducted in 2018. The outcome of the election was contested by the losing party at the tribunal and of course they got judgment at the tribunal. The matter went to the court of appeal, the court of appeal decided the case in favour of our party and in favour of Alhaji Gboyega Oyetola, the matter was appealed by the losing party to the supreme Court and the supreme Court put a final seal as to the victory of our party in that election. By my training as a lawyer, the matter is said to be res judicata.”
