The president, Association of Senior Civil Servants of Nigeria, ASCSN, Comrade Etim Tommy, has said that even with the rising inflation in the country some states are yet to implement the current minimum wage, urging government at all levels to prioritize workers’ welfare.
He made this known recently in a chat with the media in Abuja, where he frowned at the fact that some states are yet to implement the N30k minimum wage, adding that issues of double taxation and anti-workers’ policies have adversely affected workers and their collective productivity.
He said, “Like our slogan says struggle continue, so we cannot say it is yet Uhuru. We will continue to struggle because already workers have been overstretched by double taxation and undue policies that have grossly affected the them.
“Even the issue of minimum wage, some states are still becoming recalcitrance, so is a concern to us as leaders. For governors who partook in the negotiations reached, so is a collective bargaining agreement, that is supposed to be implemented is behaving recalcitrantly, it therefore, call for concern.
“The governors have sworn to protect lives and properties, which also have inclusiveness of workers’ welfare and wellbeing is also a big concern for us.
“This also give credence for those who are clamouring that labour matters should be taken out of exclusive legislation list. This therefore, means that they do not mean well for Nigerian workers and for Nigeria as an entity”.
