Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign as Nigeria’s president with immediate effect.
Ortom made the call at a press conference at the Government House, Makurdi, while speaking on the state of the nation.
The governor, who lamented increased cases of insecurity as well as disunity among Nigerians and other challenges, said the APC government was lacking in vision insisting that, President Buhari should resign and hand over to his Vice, Yemi Osinbajo.
Ortom, who noted that the primary responsibility of any government is security of lives and property, condemned the continuous killing of innocent Benue citizens by militia herdsmen and the inability of the federal government to curtail them.
According to him, about 18 out of 23 local government areas of the state, are under siege with herdsmen killing and maiming innocent people on a daily basis.
Ortom said, “The APC-led government has, completely, failed to fulfill the promises they made to Nigerians in 2015. I was part of the people who elected President Buhari and we worked very hard for it.
“But I have not seen the level of nepotism that is being done in this administration. I have never seen this level of disunity, this level of insecurity and we have not witnessed the economy going down the way it is doing.
“Those who are complacent and are keeping quiet will also suffer it because, one day, they may not be able to ride in their air-conditioned cars but I will continue to talk. I have called this press conference to let Mr President know that things are not going well in this country.”
“I am not only talking but also proposing solutions. I have have severally proposed security summit but nothing has happened. I have more than 1.5 million IDPs in Benue as a result of herdsmen killings and the N10 billion the president promised to Benue and other states has not been redeemed. The growing number of out of school children is a dangerous trend and we must take actions to redeem ourselves.”
“This is about incompetence, non performance, bare-footedness and visionless. I want President Buhari to accept the fact that he has failed this country and he should honourably resign as the president of Nigeria and hand over to his vice. He will do better that what we have now.”
Ortom, who lamented that over 100 security personnel have been killed between 2017 till date, said the state will no longer compromise its security but will take decisive actions to compliment the security operatives.
He said Nigerians must rise up, above political, religious and tribal sentiments, and join hands with Benue in insisting that more proactive steps be taken to ensure the progress of the country.
