Tension in Abuja as Hausa Okada riders clash with Igbo traders

By Laraba Murey

There is uneasy calm in Abuja following fighting at the popular Building Materials Market in Dei-Dei, Abuja as commercial motorcyclists attacked traders and burned down several shops.
The crisis according to one account broke out after a trailer allegedly crushed a woman to death after she fell from a commercial motorbike.
The shop owners infuriated by the fatal accident burnt the motorcycle of the commercial cyclist they blamed for the death of his passenger.
Another unverified account said the cause of the conflict was a result of religious argument between some Igbos and Hausas’ in the area which saw the Dunamis Church Dakwa, vandalized and several shops burnt.
Efforts to get confirmation of the fighting from Josephine Adeh, spokesperson of the police in the Federal Capital Territory, proved little as she said the police were yet to get full details on the matter.
“Right now we are there and we are trying to calm the situation down,” Adeh stated.
