The Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, has urged its affiliate unions to refrain from the practice of retaining retirees in continued paid employment or elective office.
NLC conveyed its advisory in a letter dated 8th August 2022, addressed to presidents and general secretaries all NLC affiliates across Nigeria; and jointly signed by its President, Ayuba Wabba, General Secretary, Comrade Emmanuel Ugboaja, and Treasurer Marwan Adamu.
According to the letter titled: “Congress Organ Decision on the Impropriety of Retaining Retired Officers,” the practice of retaining retirees has wreaked havoc and affected the integrity and stability of the labour movement.
NLC recalled that its last National Executive Council Meeting held on 30th June, 2022 discussed and condemned the unethical and illegal practice of retaining retirees in continued paid employment or in elective office by unions.
The congress said this practice has been frowned upon by the courts and it has received specific communication from the judiciary to advice its affiliates to desist from such unwholesome practice.
