World Environment Day: Elumelu plants tree at Transcorp Hilton Abuja

The Chairman of Transcorp Group, Mr Tony Elumelu, on Monday, joined Transcorp Hilton Abuja, to celebrate the 2023 World Environment Day by personally planting a tree on the premises of the iconic Transcorp Hilton Abuja.

A statement by the hotel described Elumelu’s action as a symbolic act, and a reminder that trees play an essential role in mitigating the impact of climate change.

Transcorp Hilton noted that the special tree planting ceremony it hosted reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and environmental stewardship.

“World Environment Day, celebrated annually on the 5th of June, is a global initiative that encourages worldwide awareness and action for the protection of our environment.

“As an organisation that is committed to improving lives and transforming society, reducing carbon footprints, and preserving the natural resources that make our planet thrive, highlights Transcorp Hotels’ dedication to the United Nation’s Sustainability Development Goals, particularly those related to responsible consumption and production, climate action, and life on land.

“By integrating sustainability into its core values and operations, Transcorp Hotels aims to drive positive social and environmental impacts while delivering exceptional hospitality experiences to its guests,” the statement said.

It further disclosed that the Managing Director of Transcorp Hotels Plc, Dupe Olusola, who also planted a tree, expressed her enthusiasm, stating, “At Transcorp Hotels Plc, we believe that sustainability is not just an option but a responsibility.

“By planting this tree, we are taking a tangible step towards creating a greener future and will continue to implement sustainable practices throughout our operations which will inspire our guests to be mindful of their environmental impact.”

On his part, Elumelu commended his team for their ongoing efforts in advancing the hotel group’s sustainability agenda, emphasising the importance of collective efforts to create a legacy for generations to come.

“As a forward-thinking Group, we believe in exploring innovative ways to reduce energy consumption, minimise waste, and support local communities. We are creating a sustainable future by positively impacting our communities, our environment, and our planet,” he said.

He noted that Transcorp Hotels Plc is committed to sustainable practices and environmental-friendly initiatives with a strong recycling programme, the organisation donates a portion of the proceeds from its recyclable waste to the ‘Bottles for Books’ Initiative, which supports waste collectors and out-of-school children every year.
