Alumni Association presents scholarships, financial awards to 11 students 

The Government Girls’ Secondary School/Methodist Girls’ High School Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Incorporation ,GGSS/MGHS Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc,.has announced the presentation of eleven financial awards and continuation of two scholarships to students at the Methodist Girls’ High School, Harbour Road, Port-Harcourt, Nigeria on July 19 2023.

Representing GGSS/MGHS Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc., Barrister Godwins Amadi presented the Ambassador Elizabeth Bolere Ketebu Science Award to Princess Emmanuel, and the Alumni Diaspora Excelsior Award to Shalom T. Benrich.  This year, the Association added two new awards, the Sam Wobo Excellence in Religious Studies Award, and the Amil Kim Williamson English Award.    So, Barrister Amadi also presented the Sam Wobo Award to Hannah Adawo and Virtue Dede.  While Gift Eberechikwu Godwin, Ibiso Merit Gabriel, Royal Ojonimi Charles, Angel Lekia, Princess Emmanuel, Christabel Joseph-Mark, and Shalom T. Benrich, each received the Amil Kim Williamson English Award.  The Association is also continuing its Alumni Diaspora Enabler Scholarship and the Nkem Ahiakwo Memorial Scholarship For Academic Excellence to Haruna Queeneth Amakiri and Blessing Obarianesime Obasi, respectively.  While presenting the awards, Barrister Amadi thanked the Association “for this level of support to these children and their parents”.

In addition to the above awards, this year, the Association also ensured that the recipient of the first Alumni Diaspora Excelsior Award in 2021, Empress Furo enrolled in the university to pursue her dream of becoming a physician, due to the diligence of Gladys Gilbert, the Chair of the Association’s Welfare Committee.  Kudos Gladys!!!       

The goal of the GGSS/MGHS Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc. is to advance the mutual welfare of GGSS/MGHS and its alumni in the Diaspora. The Association’s President, Dr. Anne Medinus Benibo said  “These awards are given in fulfillment of the Association’s third objective, which is to provide opportunities for alumni to remain connected and to serve the school. In fulfillment of the Association’s Cardinal Project number 1, scholarships were awarded to two Indigent students to enable them to stay in school and towards the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 1: End Extreme Poverty.  To empower the future generation of girls and motivate them to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, monetary awards were also given to students who excelled in all areas.  This is also in fulfillment of the Association’s Cardinal Project 3 and the attainment of Sustainable Development Goal 5: Gender Equality.   We cherish our experiences at GGSS, a public school which evolved into MGHS, a private parochial school.”  Special thanks to Barrister Amadi for taking the time off his busy schedule to select the awardees based on the Association’s stated criteria and presenting the awards at the MGHS’ graduation ceremony.  Kudos to Angelina Oumo, the Chair of the Awards Committee for convincing Barrister Amadi to represent us. 

Government Girls’ Secondary School/Methodist Girls’ High School Alumni Association in the Diaspora, Inc. was formed four years ago, incorporated in January 2020 as a charity organization and became a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization in March 2021.
