NEMA boosts rescue efforts, warns of epidemics amid Maiduguri flood

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has intensified its search and rescue operations in Maiduguri following the devastating floods that have trapped residents in their homes. The Director General of NEMA, Mrs. Zubaida Umar, announced the deployment of additional personnel and equipment to support ongoing efforts.

NEMA has also issued a warning about the risk of waterborne diseases due to flood-contaminated water. To mitigate this, the agency is supplying clean water to displaced persons in temporary shelters, including Bakassi camp.

Since the flooding began last weekend, triggered by heavy rains and the overflow of the Alau dam, NEMA’s North East zonal office has collaborated with the Borno State Emergency Management Agency and other stakeholders to conduct search and rescue operations and assess the situation for further assistance.

Vice President Kashim Shettima recently visited the flood-affected areas, promising federal support for recovery efforts and commending NEMA’s work. He assured displaced persons that aid would reach all impacted communities.
