DOAS Director faces N500M libel suit for alleged defamation

In a legal showdown, DOAS Director Dr. Baba Gana Adam faces a N500 million libel suit over alleged defamation of businessman Dr. Donald Amangbo.

The case, filed at FCT High Court, revolves around a press statement published in the Authority newspaper.

Adam, a Director in the Nyesom Wike-led Federal Capital Territory Administration, from the Department of Outdoor Advertisement and Signage (DOAS), appeared in an Abuja court on Thursday to confront allegations of libel, along with accusations against a well-known newspaper.

The lawsuit, registered as FCT/HC/CV/6082/2023 at the FCT High Court, was initiated by Abuja-based businessman Dr. Donald Amangbo, who not only targets Dr. Adam but also accuses the Authority newspaper of deliberately tarnishing his reputation.

Dr. Amangbo is pursuing damages amounting to N500 million against both defendants for the damaging publication. In his court filing, he asserted that on March 29, 2023, Dr. Baba Gana Adam labeled him a Fake Revenue Kingpin in the FCT through a press statement in the Authority newspaper, urging potential revenue payers to steer clear.

Initially scheduled for a hearing on December 14, 2023, the case has been adjourned to March 26 of the following year.

Following the court proceedings, plaintiff counsel Mr. Solomon Tunyan and A.J Adagami from Karina Tunyan SAN & Co expressed their readiness to present evidence and substantiate the claims of libel against all defendants during the next adjourned date.
